Greece: Unemployment rate falls in December

The number of unemployed fell by 19,365 in December, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (EL.STAT.). The fall was more pronounced than November’s 9,714 decrease.

The unemployment rate fell in December, edging down from November’s 24.5% to 24.0%. In addition, December’s figure was below that of the same month of the previous year (December 2014: 25.9%) and marked the lowest unemployment rate since April 2012. Despite the improvements registered over the past year, Greece’s unemployment rate is still well above the Eurozone average.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect unemployment to average 24.9% in 2016. For 2017, the panel expects the unemployment rate to average 24.2%.
