Greece: Unemployment rate drops in January

The number of unemployed fell by 1,221 in January, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (EL.STAT.). January’s fall marked a smaller drop over December’s 1,234 decrease.

The unemployment rate inched down from 25.9% in December to 25.7% in January. The reading was below that of the same month of the previous year (January 2014: 27.2%). Despite the improvements registered in recent months, Greece’s unemployment rate is still well above the Eurozone average.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect unemployment to average 25.3% in 2015. For 2016, the panel expects the unemployment rate to average 23.5%.
