Germany: Industrial production rebounds in April

June 6, 2014

In April, industrial output expanded a seasonally-adjusted 0.2% over the previous month, which contrasted the revised 0.6% contraction registered in March (previously reported: -0.5% month-on-month) and came in below the 0.4% increase that the markets had expected. April’s rebound was driven by expansions in manufacturing production and in electricity production.

Compared to the same month last year, industrial output slowed from a 2.9% increase in March to a 1.8% expansion in April. Despite the slowdown recorded in the annual figure, the trend continued to point upward. Annual average growth in industrial production rose from 1.7% in March to 1.8% in April.

Forecasters polled by FocusEconomics expect that industrial production will expand 3.0% in 2014, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2015, the panel sees industrial production increasing 2.8%.
