Germany: Consumer confidence reaches fresh high in August

July 27, 2017

The forward-looking consumer climate indicator published by the GfK Group edged up from 10.8 points in July to 10.6 points in August.

Looking at other sentiment indicators for July published in the same survey, the increase is consistent with the sharp increase in economic and income expectations, thanks to the economy’s continued strong performance and the labor market’s strength. Consumers’ propensity to buy edged down slightly, but wasn’t too far off historic highs.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to expand 1.3% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s estimate. For 2018, panelists see private consumption growing 1.5%.
