Germany: German business sentiment ticks down but stays positive in April

Confidence among German businesses moderated marginally in April, nevertheless resting firmly in optimistic terrorist. The business confidence index, elaborated by the Ifo Institute, fell slightly from March’s 106.7 to 106.6 in April. The result contrasted market expectations of the index rising to 107.1.

According to the institute, the slight setback mainly reflects that firms became somewhat less optimistic regarding the current business situation. Conversely, companies turned more optimistic regarding future business development. Overall, the Ifo Institute commented on April’s print that, “the moderate upturn in the German economy continues.” Sector-wise, sentiment improved in the manufacturing and the construction sectors, while it dropped among retailers and wholesalers.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect gross fixed investment to expand 2.6% in 2016, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. In 2017, the panel sees investment growth accelerating to 2.5%.
