Germany Business Confidence February 2017

Germany: Business confidence rises in February

February 22, 2017

German business confidence rose to 111.0 in February, reaching the same multi-year high it had achieved in December 2016. The result overshot market expectations of a continued moderation to 109.6.

According to the Institute, the increase mainly reflects that companies became more optimistic about current and future business conditions. The upturn was especially pronounced in the wholesaling sector. The manufacturing sector also enjoyed a solid improvement in business sentiment. These increases more than compensated for the moderate drop in the retailing sector and the steep fall in the construction sector.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect gross fixed investment to expand 1.9% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. In 2018, the panel sees investment growth reaching 3.0%.
