France: Sarkozy closes in on Hollande

March 30, 2012

According to recent polls, French President Nicolas Sarkozy boosted his popularity with his handling of the Toulouse shootings on 22 March, ahead of the first round elections on 22 April. A poll conducted on 23 and 24 March by consulting firm Harris Interactive showed Sarkozy as favorite over Socialist challenger Francois Hollande in the first round. According to the survey, Sarkozy would lead the elections with 28% of the votes against 27% for Hollande, while Marine le Pen from the right-wing National Front (FN) would secure 16% of votes. However, under the French system, a run-off will be held between the two main candidates if no one attains a majority vote in the first round. According to the Harris Interactive poll, as well as an Ipsos survey, Hollande maintains a lead over Sarkozy. If they were to face each other, Hollande would beat Sarkozy by 54% to 46% in the decisive run-off on 6 May.
