France: Inflation moderates in April

May 15, 2012

In April, consumer prices rose 0.1% over the previous month, which was well below the strong 0.8% increase recorded in March. The monthly increase came in on the back of higher prices for manufactured goods and services. Annual inflation, however, fell from 2.3% in March to 2.1%, exceeding market expectations that had inflation moderating to 2.2%. The core inflation index, which excludes more volatile categories such as oil, fruit and vegetables, was flat over the previous month, which followed the 0.5% increase recorded in March. As a result, annual core inflation edged down from 1.6% in March to 1.4% in April. Finally, HICP inflation (based on the harmonized index of consumer prices) fell to 2.4% from 2.6% in March. Annual average HICP, however, inched up to 2.5% from 2.4% in March.
