France: Industrial production strengthens in December

February 10, 2015

In December, industrial production soared a seasonally-adjusted 1.5% over the previous month, which contrasted the revised 0.2% fall registered in November (previously reported: -0.3% month-on-month) and came in well above market expectations of a 0.3% rise. The monthly jump, which marked the fastest monthly increase in 20 months, was the result of a strong rebound in manufacturing production and in construction.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, industrial production fell 0.1% in December, which nevertheless came in above the 2.8% contraction observed in November.

In the full year 2014, industrial production contracted 1.0%, which as double the 0.5% decrease tallied in 2013.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial production to expand 1.1% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, participants expect industrial output to accelerate to a 1.8% expansion.
