France: Industrial production shrinks in April

June 10, 2015

In April, industrial production contracted 0.9% over the previous month, which came in below the revised flat growth tallied in March (previously reported: -0.3% month-on-month). The result marked a six-month low and significantly undershot the 0.4% expansion the markets had expected. The fall reflected contractions in both manufacturing and construction sectors.

In annual terms, industrial output contracted 0.1% in April, which contrasted the 1.8% increase recorded in March and marked a four-month low.

Despite the decrease, the annual average variation in industrial production inched up to minus 0.4% in April from minus 0.6% in March, thus hitting a one-year high.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial production to expand 0.7% in 2015, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, participants expect industrial output to accelerate to a 1.8% expansion.
