France: Industrial production remains sluggish in February

April 10, 2015

In February, industrial production recorded zero growth over the previous month, which came in below the revised 0.3% expansion tallied in January (previously reported: +0.4% month-on-month). The flat reading reflected a stagnation in manufacturing and a decline in the construction sector. Despite the record being the lowest in three months, it slightly overshot the 0.1% contraction the markets had expected.

Annual figures were more positive as industrial output rose 0.6% in February, a slight increase from the 0.5% reading recorded in January, which marked the biggest expansion in over a year.

The annual average variation in industrial production inched up to minus 0.9% in February from minus 1.0% in January, hitting a four-month high.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial production to expand 0.7% in 2015, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, participants expect industrial output to accelerate to a 1.9% expansion.
