France: Industrial production expands at the start of the year

March 10, 2016

In January, industrial production rose 1.3% over the previous month, which contrasted the 0.6% contraction tallied in December and marked the largest expansion since August 2015. The result overshot the 0.8% rise that the market had expected. The increase reflected expansions in both manufacturing and construction, with the latter expanding at the fastest rate since March 2012.

In annual terms, industrial output increased 2.0% in January, which contrasted December’s 0.2% fall. Meanwhile, the annual average variation in industrial production in January remained stable at December’s 1.9%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial production to expand 1.6% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, participants expect industrial output to accelerate to a 1.9% expansion.
