France: Industrial production drops in December

February 10, 2017

Industrial production swung from a revised 2.4% expansion in November (previously reported: +2.2% month-on-month) to a 0.9% contraction in December. The reading was worse than market analysts’ expectations of a softer 0.7% drop. The decline in industrial output reflects an across-the-board drop in all sub-components of the index with the mining and quarrying, energy, water supply and waste management component declining the most.

In annual terms, industrial production slowed from a revised 1.9% expansion in November (previously reported: +1.8% year-on-year) to 1.3% in December. Meanwhile, annual average growth in industrial production edged up from 0.2% to 0.4%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial production to expand 1.1% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2018, participants expect industrial output to accelerate to a 1.3% expansion.
