France: Industrial output defies market expectations

October 10, 2012

In August, industrial output added 1.5% over the previous month in seasonally adjusted terms, which was up from the revised 0.6% increase tallied in July (previously reported: +0.2% month-on-month), and was driven by strong manufacturing production. The monthly reading defied market expectations of a 0.3% drop. On an annual basis, however, industrial activity contracted 0.9% in August, which was up from the 2.8% drop observed in July. Despite the softer decline, the trend continued to deteriorate, with annual average variation in industrial production declining from minus 0.8% to minus 1.2%, the lowest level in over two years
