France: Industrial output declines in April

June 12, 2017

In April, industrial production dropped 0.5% month-on-month expansion, contrasting the revised 2.2% increase observed in March (previously reported: +2.0% mom). The reading surprised market analysts who expected a 0.2% expansion. The downswing in industrial output reflected how a contraction in manufacturing more than offset expansions in construction and mining and quarrying, energy, water supply and waste management.

In annual terms, industrial production eased from a strong 2.5% expansion in March to 0.6% in April. Meanwhile, annual average growth in industrial production edged up from March’s 0.1% to 0.2% in April.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial production to expand 1.2% in 2017, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2018, participants expect industrial output to accelerate to a 1.5% expansion.
