Finland: Current account surplus increases in September

The current account posted a EUR 395 million surplus in September, according to Statistics Finland. This result followed the EUR 646 million surplus recorded in the same month last year.

The trade balance registered a surplus of EUR 242 million in September, down from the EUR 455 million surplus recorded in September 2014. On an annual basis, exports fell 11.9% in September, which followed last month’s 3.1% contraction. Imports contracted 8.6%, which marked a deterioration over last month’s 5.4% decrease.

In the 12 months up to September, the current account balance recorded a EUR 0.6 billion surplus. The figure was down from last month’s tally of EUR 0.9 billion and represents the lowest accumulated current account surplus since June this year.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect the current account deficit to reach 0.5% of GDP in 2015, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s projection. For 2016, the panel expects the current account deficit to be at 0.4% of GDP, which unchanged from last month’s forecast.
