Ecuador Inflation February 2016

Ecuador: Inflation moderates in February

March 4, 2016

In February, consumer prices rose 0.14% over the previous month, which was below January’s 0.31% increase. The food and non-alcoholic beverages component of the index observed the largest monthly increase. The strong USD, which the country has adopted as its currency, has pushed down the price for imported goods, limiting inflationary pressures.

Inflation was 2.6% in February, the lowest reading since November 2013 and down from the 3.1% recorded in January. Annual average variation in consumer prices inched down to 3.8% in February from 3.9% in January.

Panelists participating in the LatinFocus Consensus Forecast foresee inflation at 2.9% at the end of 2016, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s estimate. In 2017, participants expect inflation to decrease to 2.9%.
