Preliminary national accounts data revealed that sequential and annual growth was the fastest in the Euro area in Q4, smashing market expectations. Moreover, revised estimates showed the economy did, in fact, avoid entering a technical recession in Q3. Q4’s sequential growth acceleration reflected a broad-based improvement: Private consumption and exports of goods and services both rose at a steeper pace, while government spending rebounded. Consequently, 2023 GDP growth likewise overshot market expectations, coming in at 1.8% (2022: +2.7%). The pharmaceutical industry was the main engine of growth last year. Additionally, the Danish economy benefited from recovering purchasing power, as wage growth outpaced inflation, supporting household spending. Moving to Q1, our Consensus is for the economy to flatline in sequential terms, largely reflecting a high base of comparison.
