Czech Republic: Industrial production jumps in January

March 15, 2017

Industrial production in the Czech Republic grew 9.6% year-on-year in January, which followed the slower 2.7% expansion registered in December. The reading mainly reflected expansions in the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, manufacturing of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers and manufacturing of fabricated metal products sub-sectors. In contrast, the manufacturing of other transport equipment and mining and quarrying sub-sectors declined. As a slight caveat, it should be noted that January 2017 had two more working days than the corresponding month of 2016.

A month-on-month comparison showed that industrial output expanded 3.5% in seasonally-adjusted terms in January, which contrasted December’s 2.1% contraction and marked the highest result in five months. Consequently, annual average growth in industrial production accelerated from 3.0% in December to 3.7% in January.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial output to expand 3.6% in 2017, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2018, panelists expect industrial output to expand 4.1%.
