Costa Rica: Growth in economic activity remains solid in December

In December, economic activity increased 4.1% from the same month of the previous year, according to the monthly index of economic activity (IMAE, Indice Mensual de Actividad Económica), coming in slightly below November’s 4.3% figure. The expansion was broad-based, with the construction sector leading the way, while the agricultural and manufacturing sectors also grew strongly.

Compared to the previous month, economic activity expanded 0.29% in December, slightly below November’s revised 0.34% rise (previously reported: +0.22% month-on-month). Meanwhile, the annual average growth in economic activity was 4.3% in December, mirroring November’s figure.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect GDP to expand 4.0% in 2017, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s projection. For 2018, participants see GDP growing 3.9%.
