Colombia: Inflation inches up in February

March 4, 2012

In February, consumer prices added 0.61% over the previous month. The figure was below both the 0.73% rise observed in January as well as market expectations of a 0.80% increase. The monthly rise mainly reflected a sharp increase in education prices. As a result of the monthly rise, annual headline inflation inched up from 3.5% in January to 3.6% in February. The core inflation index, which excludes volatile items such as fresh food and fuels, also increased 0.61% month-on-month in February. Nevertheless, annual core inflation remained stable at January's 3.8%, thus still within the Central Bank's target of 3.0%, with a 1.0 percentage point tolerance margin.
