Colombia: Industrial production contracts for the first time in six months

In January, industrial production declined 0.2% annually, which contrasted the 2.7% increase observed in December and marked the worst result since July 2016. According to DANE, January’s reading reflected decreases in 20 out of the 39 components of the industrial production index. The beverages category was the main factor behind January’s contraction in industrial output.

As a result of January’s contraction, annual average growth in industrial production fell from 3.8% in December to 3.2%.

Panelists surveyed for this month’s LatinFocus report expect industrial production to expand 5.4% in 2017, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2018, the panel expects industrial production to increase 3.0%.
