Colombia: Consumer confidence records sharp fall in January

The Fedesarrollo consumer sentiment index swung from December’s 1.1 points to minus 21.3 points in January. As a consequence of the sharp fall, the index dropped significantly below the 0-point threshold that separates optimistic from pessimistic territory and reached a multi-year low.

The result came on the back of a downturn in all of the five sub-categories that comprise the index. In particular, consumers’ view of both present and expected general economic conditions in Colombia recorded significant deteriorations.

LatinFocus Consensus Forecast participants expect total consumption to expand 2.6% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel expects total consumption to increase 3.2%.
