Colombia: Consumer confidence dips into negative territory in August

September 16, 2015

The Fedesarrollo consumer sentiment index fell in August, decreasing from 2.6 points in July to -0.4 points and reaching its lowest value since April 2009. As a result of the fall, the index is now slightly below the 0-point threshold that separates optimistic from pessimistic territory.

The deterioration reflected decreases in three of the five sub-components that comprise the index. More precisely, a significant fall in consumers’ willingness to buy big-ticket items more than offset more optimistic views about the future general economic climate.

LatinFocus Consensus Forecast participants expect total consumption to expand 3.2% in 2015, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, the panel expects total consumption to increase 3.0%.
