China: Growth in industrial production slows in April

In April, industrial production expanded 6.0% over the same month of last year. The print came in below the 6.8% rise tallied in March and undershot the 6.5% expansion that market analysts had expected. April’s reading reflected weaker expansions in all the main sub-components of the index.

On a monthly basis, industrial production in April expanded 0.47% in seasonally-adjusted terms, which was down from the 0.63% increase tallied in March. As a result of April’s slowdown, the trend stabilized with annual average growth in industrial production remaining at March’s 6.0%.

For 2016, FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial production to grow 5.8%, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s projection. In 2017, the panel sees industrial production growth falling to 5.5%.
