Chile: Economic activity moderates in December

February 5, 2016

In December 2015, economic activity rose 1.5% over the same month of the previous year, according to the monthly indicator for economic activity (IMACEC). The figure came in below the 1.8% increase tallied in November. According to the Central Bank, December’s moderation mainly reflects than a drop in mining activity partly offset an expansion in the services sector.

On a monthly basis, economic activity in December rose 0.83% on a seasonally-adjusted basis, which contrasted November’s 0.41% drop. Annual average growth in economic activity inched down from 2.1% in November to 2.0% in December.

Panelists participating in the LatinFocus Consensus Forecast see the economy growing 2.3% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel expects the economy to pick up the pace and expand 3.1%.
