Chile: Consumers turn optimistic in June

In June, the Adimark GfK consumer confidence index (IPEC, Indice de Percepcion de la Economia) rose to 50.3 points from 48.7 points in May. The rise in June reflects growing confidence among consumers, who turned optimistic for the first time since January 2011, with the index rising slightly above the 50-point threshold that separates optimism from pessimism. The improvement was mainly driven by consumers' more positive assessment regarding both their current personal situation and the current general economic situation. Moreover, respondents' to the June survey had more optimistic expectations on the country's future economic prospects. That said, consumers' willingness to make major purchases deteriorated somewhat over the previous month.
