Chile Business Confidence Q3 2016

Chile: Businesses turn less pessimistic in Q3

October 6, 2016

In Q3, the mood among Chilean businesses improved and reached the highest level in a year. The business confidence index (IEE, Indice de Expectativas Empresariales) produced by the Santiago Chamber of Commerce (Camara de Comercio de Santiago) rose from Q2’s 46.1 points to 49.5 points in Q3. However, for a fifth consecutive quarter the index still rested below the 50-point threshold that separates optimism from pessimism.

According to the Santiago Chamber of Commerce, Q3’s increase mainly reflected upticks in the construction, commerce, services and industrial sectors, while sentiment fell marginally among businesses in the natural resources sector. Sentiment improved across companies of all sizes (small, medium and large).

Panelists participating in the LatinFocus Consensus Forecast expect fixed investment to drop 0.2% this year, which is down 0.2 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel sees fixed investment expanding 0.8%.
