Chile: Business confidence strengthens in February

March 4, 2016

Chilean businesses grew somewhat more confident in February. The business confidence index (IMCE, Indicador Mensual de Confianza Empresarial) published by ICARE and the Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, rose from 45.0 points in January to 46.4 points in February, which marked the highest reading in eight months. Despite this improvement, the index remains below the 50-point threshold that separates pessimism from optimism, where it has been since April 2014.

February’s increase reflected strengthening sentiment in the industry and the trade sectors. Conversely, confidence dropped notably in the construction sector and slightly in the mining sector.

Panelists surveyed for this month’s LatinFocus report expect fixed investment to grow 1.4% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s estimate. In 2017, the panel expects private investment to increase 3.1%.
