Chile: Business confidence stable in December

January 5, 2016

The business confidence index (IMCE, Indicador Mensual de Confianza Empresarial) published by ICARE and the Universidad Adolfo Ibañez, in December remained at November’s 42.5 points. As a result, the index remains below the 50-point threshold that separates pessimism from optimism, where it has been since April 2014.

December’s result mainly reflected that stronger sentiment in the construction, trade and—to a lesser extent—mining sectors was offset by weaker sentiment in industry.

Panelists surveyed for this month’s LatinFocus report expect fixed investment to grow 1.2% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s estimate. In 2017, the panel expects private investment to increase 2.8%.
