Chile: Business confidence reaches lowest level in almost five years

June 6, 2014

In May, the business confidence index (IMCE, Indicador Mensual de Confianza Empresarial) published by Icare and the Universidad Adolfo Ibañez fell from 48.9 points in April to 47.4 points in May, which marked the lowest level since July 2009. Business confidence is now further below the 50-point threshold that separates pessimism from optimism.

May’s figure was driven by a deterioration in all of the sub-components of the index, where trade and industry recorded the biggest drops compared to the previous month.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect fixed private investment to grow 0.2% in 2014, which is down 0.7 percentage points from last month’s estimate. In 2015, the panel expects private investment to increase 5.3%.
