Chile: Business confidence moderates in Q2

July 8, 2015

In Q2, the business confidence index (IEE, Indice de Expectativas Empresariales) produced by the Santiago Chamber of Commerce (Camara de Comercio de Santiago) fell from Q4’s 55.4 points to 52.3 points. As a result of the decrease, the index now stands at its lowest level in half a year, but still remains above the 50-point threshold that separates optimism from pessimism.

The decrease in Q2 came on the back of firms’ weaker outlook on the industry, services and commerce sectors. According to the Chamber of Commerce, a slight increase in firms’ investment plans was registered in Q2. However, expectations regarding future sales and employment moderated compared to Q1.

LatinFocus panelists expect fixed investment to drop 0.2% this year, which is down 0.2 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, the panel sees fixed investment to expand 2.9%.
