Chile: Business confidence improves somewhat in September

October 6, 2014

The business confidence index (IMCE, Indicador Mensual de Confianza Empresarial) published by Icare and the Universidad Adolfo Ibañez rose from 41.3 points in August to 43.2 points in September. The reading marked the first improvement after five consecutive months of decline. Despite the increase, the index remains below the 50-point threshold that separates pessimism from optimism.

September’s figure was driven by an improvement in the construction and mining sectors. On the other hand, trade and industry preformed worse compared to the previous month and reached their lowest levels since April 2009 and July 2009, respectively.

LatinFocus Consensus Forecast panelists expect fixed investment to grow 0.2% in 2014, which is down 0.7 percentage points from last month’s estimate. In 2015, the panel expects private investment to increase 5.3%.
