Chile: Business confidence improves slightly in June; stays in contraction territory

July 8, 2015

The business confidence index (IMCE, Indicador Mensual de Confianza Empresarial) published by ICARE and the Universidad Adolfo Ibañez, improved slightly from 46.5 points in May to 47.1 points in June. Despite the moderate increase, the index remains below the 50-point threshold that separates pessimism from optimism.

June’s improvement reflects largely reflects rising confidence in the construction sector, which hit a 15-month high in June, and to a lesser extent improving confidence in the industrial sector. Conversely, confidence in the mining sector decreased in June.

LatinFocus Consensus Forecast panelists expect fixed investment to grow 0.6% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s estimate. In 2016, the panel expects private investment to increase 3.3%.
