Chile: Business confidence falls slightly in May

June 6, 2015

The business confidence index (IMCE, Indicador Mensual de Confianza Empresarial) published by ICARE and the Universidad Adolfo Ibañez, fell from 48.5 points in April to 46.5 points in May, which marked a three-month low. As a result of the decrease, the index remains below the 50-point threshold that separates pessimism from optimism.

May’s reading reflects that falling confidence in the industry, trade and construction sectors was partly offset by higher confidence in the mining sector. Confidence in the mining sector hit a 17-month high, while confidence in the industry sector fell to a 5-month low.

LatinFocus Consensus Forecast panelists expect fixed investment to grow 1.0% in 2015, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s estimate. In 2016, the panel expects private investment to increase 3.5%.
