Chile: Business confidence broadly stable in April

May 6, 2015

The business confidence index (IMCE, Indicador Mensual de Confianza Empresarial) published by ICARE and the Universidad Adolfo Ibañez, remained virtually unchanged in April as it inched down from 48.6 points in March to 48.4 points. As a result of the decrease, the index still remains below the 50-point threshold that separates pessimism from optimism.

April’s reading reflects that improving confidence in the mining and construction sectors was offset by lower confidence in the trade and industry sectors. Confidence in the mining sector hit a 16-month high and confidence in the construction sector had not been that high since March 2014.

LatinFocus Consensus Forecast panelists expect fixed investment to grow 1.0% in 2015, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s estimate. In 2016, the panel expects private investment to increase 3.5%.
