Bulgaria: Inflation remains steady in January

In January, consumer prices rose 0.62% over the previous month, which was above the 0.44% increase recorded in December. The higher reading mainly reflected price increases for food and non-alcoholic beverages (+1.4% month-on-month) as well as for transport (+1.4% mom). Annual inflation remained unchanged at December's 4.5%, short of market expiations of a 4.8% rise. However, annual average inflation rose from 2.4% in December to 2.8% in January. Meanwhile, at its latest policy meeting on 31 January, the Central Bank lifted the base interest rate to 0.19%, up marginally from the previous 0.18%.
