Bulgaria: Inflation hits 19-month high in January

Consumer prices in Bulgaria jumped 1.3% in January compared to the previous month, following December’s 0.6% increase. According to the National Statistical Institute, January’s reading was mainly driven by higher prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages as well as for housing.

On an annual basis, inflation increased 1.4% in January (December: +0.1% year-on-year), which marked the highest reading since June 2015. The annual average variation in consumer prices edged up from minus 0.8% in December to minus 0.7% in January.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants expect consumer prices to fall by 1.4% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. In 2018, panelists expect inflation of 2.1%.
