Brazil: Retail sales rebound in May

July 17, 2014

In May, retail sales (excluding cars and construction) rose 0.5% over the previous month in seasonally-adjusted terms. The result contrasted the 0.3% contraction tallied in April and came in above market expectations of retail sales registering flat growth. On an annual basis, retail sales expanded 4.8% in May, which was down from the 6.7% expansion seen in April.

The monthly expansion was broad based as all eight categories that make up the index registered expansions in May. Computers and communication equipment and personal and household items tallied the strongest expansions.

LatinFocus Consensus Forecast panelists expect retail sales to expand 3.3% in 2014, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2015, the panel sees retail sales growing 3.7%.
