Brazil: Retail sales contract in February

In February, retail sales (excluding cars and construction) fell 0.1% over the previous month in seasonally-adjusted terms, which contrasted January’s 0.3% rise and market expectations of a 0.2% increase. The monthly figure came on the back of a deterioration in six of eight components of the index, compared to January. The largest decrease in sales was recorded for fuels and lubricants.

On an annual basis, retail sales fell 3.1% in February, which contrasted the 0.5% increase recorded in January. Annual average growth in retail sales fell from 1.8% in January to 0.9% in February.

LatinFocus Consensus Forecast panelists expect retail sales to expand 2.5% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, the panel sees retail sales growing 2.9%.
