Brazil: Fall in economic activity moderates in April

June 19, 2015

In April, economic activity fell 0.8% over the previous month in seasonally-adjusted terms, according to the Central Bank’s monthly indicator for economic activity (IBC-Br, Indice de Atividade Economica do Banco Central). The figure was an improvement over March’s 1.5% fall, but undershot market expectations of a 0.4% fall.

On an annual basis, economic activity fell 3.1%, which contrasted March’s 0.7% expansion. Meanwhile, annual average growth inched down from March’s minus 1.2% to minus 1.3% in April.

LatinFocus Consensus Forecast panelists expect the economy to contract 1.0% in 2015, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s estimate. For 2016, the panel sees GDP growing 1.1%.
