Belgium: Economic growth moderates in Q2

July 30, 2014

According to a preliminary estimate released by the National Bank of Belgium (NBB), GDP expanded a seasonally-adjusted 0.1% over the previous quarter in Q2. Q2’s result came in below both the 0.4% expansion registered in Q1 and the 0.3% increase the markets had expected. The reading marked the slowest pace of expansion since Q1 2013.

Compared to the same period last year, GDP growth decelerated from 1.2% in Q1 to 1.0% in Q2. Detailed data will be published on 3 September.

The Federal Planning Bureau (FPB) expects the economy to increase 1.4% in 2014. For 2015, the FPB sees economic growth picking up to 1.8%. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect the economy to expand 1.3% in 2014, which is unchanged over the previous month’s Consensus. For 2015, the panel expects economic growth to pick up to 1.5%.
