Belgium: Economic growth eases in the January-to-March period

According to a preliminary estimate released by the National Bank of Belgium on 29 April, GDP in Q1 expanded a weak seasonally-adjusted 0.2% over the previous quarter. Q1’s reading marks a softer expansion over the 0.5% tallied in Q4.

Compared to the same period of the previous year, GDP growth tallied 1.5%, mirroring the reading tallied in Q4. More detailed data will be published on 31 May.

The National Bank of Belgium expects the economy to increase 1.3% in 2016 and 1.6% in 2017. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect the economy to expand 1.3% in 2016, which is unchanged over the previous month’s Consensus. For 2017, the panel expects economic growth of 1.6%.
