Belarus: Industrial production falls at steeper rate in September

October 17, 2016

In September, industrial production in Belarus contracted 0.9% over the same month last year, deteriorating from August’s softer 0.4% decline. According to the National Statistical Committee (BELSTAT), the sharper contraction came on the back of a marked drop in mining and quarrying output, the near stagnation of manufacturing and a decline in water supply at a double-digit rate.

Despite the annual decrease, the overall trend improved slightly in September as annual average growth in industrial production inched up from minus 3.1% in August to minus 2.5%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see industrial production contracting 0.9% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s Consensus. For 2017, panelists see industrial production returning to growth and expanding 0.9%, which is also unchanged from last month’s projection.
