Belarus: Industrial production contraction softens in August

September 16, 2016

In August, industrial production contracted 0.4% over the same month last year, easing from July’s more pronounced 4.4% decline. According to the National Statistical Committee (BELSTAT), the softer contraction came on the back of a rebound in manufacturing and a slightly smaller decrease in water supply. By contrast, mining and quarrying decelerated and the contraction in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply intensified.

Meanwhile, the overall trend improved slightly in August as annual average growth in industrial production recovered from minus 3.6% in July to minus 3.1%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see industrial production contracting 0.9% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s Consensus. For 2017, panelists see industrial production returning to growth and expanding 1.3%.
