Belarus: Growth in industrial production surges in May to over four-year high

Industrial production in May jumped 8.4% over the same month last year, however the reading comes in below April’s 8.7%.

According to Belarus’ National Statistical Committee (BELSTAT), the expansion was driven primarily by strong growth in the manufacture of machinery and equipment sector, while the category of other manufacturing (which includes repair and installation of machinery and equipment) recorded the biggest contraction.

Annual average growth in industrial production increased from 2.2% in April to 2.8% in May, marking the highest result in over four years.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see industrial production growing 1.4% in 2017, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s Consensus. For 2018, panelists see industrial production increasing 2.3%.
