Austria: Industry deteriorates in December

January 25, 2016

In December, industrial production decreased 1.9% over the previous month in seasonally-adjusted terms, contrasting the 0.5% expansion recorded in November and marking the lowest reading since July 2014. December’s drop was driven by the fact that manufacturing fell at a steeper pace and mining and quarrying deteriorated. In addition, production of electricity and gas also contracted, albeit less than in November, while water supply decelerated markedly.

In annual terms, industrial production dropped 1.7%, contrasting the 3.2% expansion recorded in November. Meanwhile, annual average growth in industrial production inched down from 0.8% in November to 0.7% in December.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will increase 2.1% in 2016, which is unchanged over the previous month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel expects that industrial production will increase 1.5%.
