Austria: Consumer confidence holds steady in February

February 27, 2015

The consumer confidence index elaborated by Fessel-GfK remained steady at January’s minus 12 points in February. The index continues to hover below the 0-point threshold, which indicates that pessimists outnumber optimists.

February’s reading mainly reflected that consumers’ more optimistic assessments regarding their current financial situations and current purchases of major items were offset by a more pessimistic view regarding prospects for their own financial situation in the next 12 months, as well as prospects for the general economic situation. In addition, households’ views regarding the country’s current macroeconomic situation as well as prospective employment deteriorated somewhat compared to the previous month.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast expects private consumption to expand 0.8% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists see private consumption rising 1.1%.
