Austria Consumer Confidence March 2016

Austria: Consumer confidence brightens somewhat in March

March 29, 2016

The consumer confidence index elaborated by Fessel-GfK improved slightly from February’s minus 14 points to minus 12 points in March. Despite the improvement, the index remained firmly entrenched below the 0-point threshold, which indicates that pessimists outnumber optimists.

March’s result mainly reflected households’ less pessimistic assessment regarding the current economic situation as well as their expectations for unemployment. In addition, consumers are more optimistic regarding the future financial situation, including their future savings.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to expand 1.4% in 2016, which is up 0.2 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see private consumption rising 1.3%.
