Australia: Growth in retail sales moderates in January

Nominal retail sales rose 0.4% in January over the previous month in seasonally-adjusted terms, which was slightly above the 0.2% increase recorded in December. The result was in line with market expectations.

On a year-on-year basis, the pace of growth in retail sales moderated from a 4.2% rise in December to a 4.0% increase in January. Annual average growth in retail sales ticked down from December’s 5.3% to 5.1% in January.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see private consumption growing 2.5% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, the panel sees private consumption expanding 2.6%.
